[TagRFID®]

StockSystemEvolution® enables management and control of RFID devices for Tag writing and scanning.

RFID technology is designed to store and transmit information relying on small electronic devices called tags or transponders, which transfer the information contained when activated by electromagnetic RF signals. Using RFID technology is a further opportunity to enhance corporate control and accuracy over the entire Supply Chain, taking advantage of real-time information stored within the RFID Tags applied on products, boxes, pallets, containers etc.
The Auto-ID (automatic identification) is one of the latest technologies to automatically acquire and identify data of objects and people; the use of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags is becoming increasingly common.

RFID technology is based on the capability of storing and remotely accessing data using electronic devices (called tags or transponders) that are able to respond to a query by communicating the information they contain.

An RFID system provides enhanced control of the supply chain, communicating real-time data contained in the RFID tags onto the products, boxes, pallets or containers.

For this reason, the architecture of StockSystemEvolution® has been upgraded with specific modules to manage and control a wide range of devices for reading and writing RFID tags.

The two main RFID technologies used in Supply Chain management are HF (High Frequency, 13.56 MHz) and UHF(Ultra High Frequency, 866-917 MHz).

HF

RFID tags using HF technology are generally used for proximity applications or, in any case, when the distance and population of tags are not excessive (a maximum of 10-15 cm). Benefits are: less cost than UHF tags, attachable to any label without limitation due to the materials to which is applied.

Mostly suitable for tracking single units or packages.

UHF

UHF-technology RFID tags are generally used when operating distances are great. The liberalization of 2W UHF frequencies results in more than 3 meters coverage in open-air. However some materials may absorb the waves and alter the reading and writing conditions.

It is recommended for the identification of handling units (such as pallets,crates, etc.).

In particularStockSystem®Evolution has two main components for managing the total interaction with RFID readers and tags: RFID Production Module and RFID Shipping Module.

[RFID Production Module]

The RFID Production module receives information (captured by antennas) transmitted by RFID tags. This information is about single items (tracked by HF technology), packages containing the items (tracked by HF or UHF technology) and pallets containing the packages (tracked by UHF technology); i.e. it can also drive the registration of batch-related data or production ID number.

Data are saved in a database table available for consulting and processing.

[RFID Shipping Module]

The RFID Production Module is integrated with the RFID Shipping Module that manages picking and order preparation.

For picking, stocking and pallet movements, forklift trucks are equipped with an RFID-antenna on the forks to read the data of the tags applied to the pallet. The antenna is connected with the radio terminals over a TCP/IP network.

In picking operations, the radio terminal sends the picking command generated by StockSystemEvolution® . The packages indicated by the system pass before the RFID antenna. This way the system perfectly identifies and tracks which picked packages and items are linked to a determined shipping order.

In RFID projects, processes to manage and rules can be configured as also filters on data linked to processes.
The system also perform checks and manages exceptions and alarms.

[RFID Hardware]

Replica Sistemi offers active and passive RFID systems integrated with its software applications to control and manage a wide range of devices for reading and writing RFID tags (fixed and vehicle-mounted computers, hand-held computers, printers, tags and labels).

Using the hardware devices described above, StockSystemEvolution® intercepts the signals to locate and identify merchandise, products and/or goods to ship, provided with special electronic labels. These smart labels allow the automatic tracking & tracing of merchandise/goods through the entire supply chain.

RFID Tags (or Transponders)

Depending on the field of application, RFID tags have different shapes, sizes and consistencies, based on the required use:

  • active: with an internal battery and, thus, capable of automatically transmitting a signal. It is used in situations that require the ability to read/write at distances of several meters;
  • passive: more economical without batteries, they contain only microchip, antenna and condenser that, through a magnetic field simulation, allow the transmission and reception of data at close distances.

Readers

Readers can be fixed, handled or mounted on vehicles:

  • Fixed readers: these devices can be installed next to loading and unloading bays or on high-speed conveyor belts, to read tags on pallets or large boxes. The identification is made by filtering the data and checking the peripherals.
  • Hand-held readers: these devices allow users to bring the technology in the work place, exactly where they are needed. It's the ideal choice when it is more convenient moving towards the object with a tag reader rather than bringing the objects to a fixed reader.
  • Vehicle-mounted readers: these devices provide the maximum mobility in managing the supply chain without modifying standard procedures. Instead of moving the material to read it, you can read the tag while it is being transported to the loading bay, in the warehouse or on the truck.

RFID Label Printers

An RFID tag containing a microchip and relative antenna can be placed on an adhesive label. The quantity of data that can be stored, and its allocation in memory, depend on the microchip used. Each microchip (and, thus, each label) contains a UID (Unique Identifier) that was programmed while the chip was manufactured.
